ANC Sports Provides ESPN X Games with LED Signage for 8th Consecutive Year

ANC Sports Enterprises provided the ESPN X Games 17 with rotational and light emitting diode (LED) signage for the 8th consecutive year.

After successfully debuting ANC’s 22mm Diamond Vision Event Perimeter signage during X Games 16, the 2011 summer competition more than doubled the amount of full motion graphic capabilities across approximately 400 feet of digital signage beginning July 28th in Los Angeles at locations throughout the L.A. Live complex.

X Games 17 featured more than 200 athletes and debuted the new discipline of Enduro X, as well as the first-ever rally street circuit that will run through downtown Los Angeles. ESPN, ESPN2 and ABC combined to telecast 25 hours. Additionally, ESPN 3D featured 18 hours while more than 25 hours were streamed on ESPN3.com.

ANC Sports provided ESPN with both LED and rotational signage for the 2011 Summer X Games.

Driven by the ANC’s unique VisionSOFT™ operating system, these broadcasts featured an LED system which provided X Games 17 sponsors with an unlimited amount of creative opportunities, including displaying congratulatory messages to the winners. Complementing ANC’s 22mm Diamond Vision Event Perimeter signage, X Games 17 also featured 300 feet of ANC’s rotational signage throughout L.A. Live.

ANC had six field representatives onsite to oversee the installation and operation of the LED and rotational signage. After the signage arrived on July 21st, ANC’s staff immediately began testing initial signage placements.  ANC staffed the event with team members that specialize in various areas, including display installation, LED hardware, rotational signage and media control systems.

Onsite were Dorian Bural, Jarred George, John Henne, Chad Kralik, Steve Solomson and Senior Field Representative Geoff McClune. The team had successfully completed several special events together, ensuring that all aspects of X Games 17 signage ran smoothly.

The crew worked closely with ESPN to install rotational and LED signage in various locations which included the Staples Center, Nokia Theatre and surrounding parking lots. A total of 74 LED modules were installed across Nokia Theatre, the Staples Center and the Big Air Ramp. ANC also installed 30 rotational signs on Skate Street, the BMX and Skate Park as well as the Staples Center.

Once all parties were comfortable with the signage set-up, from July 25th-27th ANC worked closely with ESPN to ensure each part of the system was in a good position for television viewing. Additionally, ANC’s team on the ground coordinated with ESPN’s production team when calibrating the displays brightness, which guaranteed the best television experience.

Let’s get started

The first events took place on July 28th. Since there are difference events competing across multiple venues each night, ANC broke down one or two venues every day and set up new layouts the following morning.

The Staples Center presented the most challenging venue, as reconfiguration was required every night. On Thursday, July 28th, the venue featured Moto X; on Friday, July 29th the arena hosted Moto X Freestyle, which was followed by Moto X Racing on Saturday, July 30th and the first time event Enduro X on Sunday, July 31st. Each of these events required a different track set up, which in turn changed how the signage was configured.

After Thursday night, rotational signage in fact was no longer even needed in the Staples Center, so ANC moved the displays to the Street and Park venues. Last year, X Games 16 featured 160 feet of ANC’s LED Event Perimeter signage which is approximately equal to what X Games 17 utilized for the events at the Staples Center alone.

On Friday, the Moto X competitions at the arena featured one section of LED running 81’ and two additional sections each measuring 36 feet on the camera side of the track. The system was again broken down and changed on Friday night for the weekend’s remaining events.

Meanwhile, the Nokia Theatre hosted the Vertical events with sections of 54 feet, 36 feet and 27 feet of the LED signage on the ramp. Event Deck at L.A. Live featured 36 feet of camera visible full motion signage during the Park and Street competitions while Lot 7 utilized two sections of the technology, each measuring 45 feet for the Big Air competitions.

Bringing the event to a close on Sunday night, ANC packed up and prepared the signage for shipping on August 1st as a new event was coming to L.A. Live, one of the busiest entertainment complexes in the world. One truck headed to the company’s warehouse in Atlanta, while another set course for Tulsa where ANC was installing the specially designed television LED Event Perimeter signage at a Professional Bull Riders Event for the first time.
